A stabbing pain in the forefoot when walking, unbearable pressure from tight shoes, hard bumps between the toes – many people in Hong Kong have suffered from these discomforts, dismissing them as simple calluses and enduring the pain. Little do they know these symptoms may be caused by corns. Though corns may seem like a minor issue, long-term neglect or improper home remedies will only worsen the pain, potentially leading to infections, gait problems and even damage to foot bone health.

At Archangel Podiatry, our Australian Registered Podiatrist provides in-person consultations, with 25 years of expertise in foot care. For all common foot skin and keratosis issues, we offer a one-stop professional care solution of Assessment - Cleansing - Repair - Conditioning. We improve foot skin condition from the root cause, delivering deep repair and long-lasting care, and restoring smooth, soft and comfortable feet.

What Are Corns? How to Distinguish Corns from Calluses and Plantar Warts?

Many people confuse corns with calluses and plantar warts, yet there are distinct differences between the three. Misdiagnosis will only lead to incorrect treatment and exacerbate the problem.

Corns are localized, conical, hard keratin plugs formed by abnormal keratin hyperplasia due to long-term foot pressure and friction, usually appearing on weight-bearing areas such as the forefoot edge, toe sides or heels.

Their key characteristic is a conical hard core – the sharp tip grows inward and compresses the subcutaneous nerves, causing intense stabbing pain when pressed or bearing weight during walking, which may even hinder normal walking in severe cases.

Distinguishing Tips (Professional Reminder from Archangel’s Podiatrist)

  • Calluses: Large in area, flat in surface, pale yellow in color. Caused by extensive friction, generally painless and only affect appearance.
  • Plantar Warts: Caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, rough in surface with small black spots, contagious. The pain is mostly tenderness rather than pressure pain.
  • Corns: Small in area, round or oval in shape, hard in texture with a distinct central core, intense stabbing pain, non-contagious, and closely related to long-term weight bearing.

High-Risk Groups for Corns

Corns are essentially caused byabnormal foot pressure distribution + long-term friction & pressure, the following groups are at high risk and need extra caution:

  1. People who stand or walk for long hours:Such as teachers, nurses, salespeople, delivery riders, etc. Their feet bear weight for extended periods daily, with the forefoot and toes under constant pressure, leading to easy keratin hyperplasia.
  2. People with improper shoe wear:Frequent wear of high heels, pointed-toe shoes or ill-fitting shoes artificially compresses the toes, alters foot pressure points and induces corns.
  3. People with foot structural abnormalities:Those with flat feet, high arches, hallux valgus, toe deformities, etc., have uneven foot pressure distribution, with specific areas bearing excessive long-term pressure, making them prone to corns.
  4. Sports enthusiasts:People who run or exercise regularly experience repeated foot pressure and friction; ill-fitting sports shoes further increase the risk of corn formation.
  5. Elderly people:With aging, the metabolism of the foot skin’s stratum corneum slows down and elasticity decreases; coupled with gait changes, keratin easily accumulates at pressure points and forms corns.
  6. Diabetic foot patients:Diminished foot sensation makes it easy to ignore injuries from friction and pressure; poor keratin repair ability leads to recurrent corns, which may even cause skin ulcers.

Professional Corn Treatment: Targeted Therapy for Root-Cause Resolution and Recurrence Prevention

Surgery is not the only way to cure corns.

The key to radical corn treatment is removing the hard core + adjusting foot pressure distribution + preventing recurrence.

Our Australian Registered Podiatrist provides medical-grade personalised treatment plans for corns of different types and locations, avoiding surgical trauma with safe and highly effective results:

  1. Accurate Diagnosis to Avoid Mis-treatment:Our Australian Registered Podiatrist conducts in-person consultations and professional examinations to precisely distinguish corns from calluses and plantar warts, laying a solid foundation for treatment by eliminating misdiagnosis and incorrect treatment.
  2. Non-Invasive Hard Core Removal:Adopting medical-grade keratin removal technology,we precisely remove the corn core without damaging healthy skin, relieving stabbing pain immediately with no surgery or recovery period required.
  3. Targeted Therapy to Eliminate Recurrence:Based on the underlying cause of corns, we develop personalised plans for patients – such as gait adjustment for those with uneven foot pressure, shoe-wearing advice for those with improper shoe wear, and custom orthotic insoles for those with foot structural abnormalities. We eliminate friction and pressure from the root to reduce recurrence rates.
  4. Specialised Care for High-Risk Groups:For special groups such as diabetic foot patients and the elderly, we adopt mild, non-irritating treatment methods with full-course care to avoid infections and ensure treatment safety.

Professional Process of Corn Treatment

  • Our Australian Registered Podiatrist first conducts an in-person assessment to accurately determine the size, depth and hyperplastic range of the corn, and identify its underlying cause simultaneously.
  • Medical-grade painless filing and trimming are adopted to ensure complete removal of the hyperplastic root with no residual tissue left (to prevent corn recurrence).
  • After trimming, medical disinfection and care are applied to the treated area.
  • Finally, personalised guidance is provided to eliminate corn recurrence from the root cause.

Treatment Features:We adhere to medical-grade standards with a fully painless, minimally invasive process that precisely targets the hyperplastic core without damaging healthy tissue. All instruments are sterilised at high temperature and pressure, with a dedicated set for each patient to eliminate cross-infection. For recurrent corns, an additional root-cause conditioning step is added to effectively reduce recurrence rates.

Treatment Effect:Mild corns are cured with one session; recurrent and deep corns can be completely cured with follow-up care sessions; after treatment, the local skin gradually regains flatness and smoothness, foot pressure is evenly distributed, and walking becomes more effortless.
