Fungal nail (onychomycosis) is more than just a cosmetic concern\u2014it is a chronic foot condition caused by fungal infection.<\/strong>Delayed treatment will only allow the fungus to spread further and deeper, leading to thickened, brittle, deformed and foul-smelling nails. In severe cases, it may even trigger ingrown toenails and paronychia, impairing walking and daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Causes Fungal Nails?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Fungal nail infection is not simply a result of poor hygiene,but occurs when dermatophytes invade the nail plate or nail bed.<\/strong>In Hong Kong\u2019s humid and hot climate, fungi thrive and spread easily. Over 80% of fungal nail cases develop from tinea pedis (athlete\u2019s foot)\u2014the fungus spreads slowly from the skin on the feet to the nail edges, then invades the nail itself and causes onychomycosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In short, fungal nails are not caused by\"dirt\", but a combination of environmental factors,<\/strong>daily habits and immune function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humidity + Poor Ventilation + Fungi + Nail Damage = Fungal Nail Infection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without treatment,<\/strong>the infection will: spread from one nail to multiple nails \u2192 to the hands \u2192 to family members \u2192 and lead to thickened nails, ingrown toenails, paronychia and worsening pain.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

It is important to note that fungal nail infections will not heal on their own. The earlier treatment is sought, the shorter the course of treatment and the lower the cost.
